En tu recorrido por Bulgaria, no puedes dejar de lado la Iglesia de Boyana, ya que se trata de un monumento declarado como Patrimonio de la Humanidad por la Unesco en 1979.
Este edificio, se encuentra en las afueras de Sofía, y se compone de dos pisos formados por tres alas, las cuales cuentan con un total de 89 escenas con 240 imágenes humanas pintadas en las paredes de la iglesia.
La iglesia fue construida poco a poco a finales del siglo X, y fue terminada a principios del siglo XI. En 1954, sus puertas fueron cerradas, con el objetivo de restaurar la iglesia y conservarla, pero, abrió sus puertas en el año 2006.
En tu visita, debes tener en cuenta que solo tendrás permitido permanecer 15 minutos dentro de sus instalaciones. Sus frescos son toda una obra de arte, y debemos mencionar, que los mismos datan del año 1259, pero la verdad es que fueron realizados sobre otros mucho más antiguos.
Entre las escenas se pueden ver representadas la vida de San Nicolás, retratos del sebastocrátor Kaloyan y su familia, retratos del Zar Constantino I y Zarina Irina, entre otros.
